Got a computer running again!

Lithius22 Mar 2004, 20:06 My neighbor down the street had this old computer that he was going to donate, but gave it to me instead, and it had the last remaining parts in it I needed to build another usable computer! Sure, it's no powerhouse like my overclocker was, but it's super cool. It's running off a Socket 3 DX/4-120 CPU ... ahhh ... the good old days ... I used a DX/4-100 when I was a kid so I just learned to love the 486s. So yeah it's got a whoopass 64MB PCI VGA card, SIMM, AWE32, a NIC for networking and internet, a 1.6GB Quantum Fireball HDD, and I get a nice big view with my overclocker's 19" monitor. I have windows 95C installed (OSR 2.5), but halted the install right when it was installing IE so it's not all raped out with IE like windows typically is. So it loads insanely fast, 30 sec at the longest, and is very stable. I thought of running good old linux, but there's no way I'd be able to run an X server, and there goes all the GUI fun.
Enough techno-speak ... I'm gonna try running a version of trackers on it and make some really old-skool electro. It's gonna be great! :Dteknodave23 Mar 2004, 05:45 I should know some of these terms, I work for an IT reseller, for corn sake! LOL
Sounds nice ~ now I just need to juice up this ancient POS AMD 350. Maybe I should just overhaul it.
I am "test driving" a Workstation 620 by Dell ~ it has 2 Intel Xeon 933MHz processors...man are they big, but OMG how they MOVE! I never surfed so fast, it makes my computer look like a snail trying to race a cheetah!
Now I dunno if I want a regular tower desktop system, or one of these workstations!!!
Maybe I can find a nice neighbor to donate one ....Lithius23 Mar 2004, 09:46 Trust me trust me trust me on this one ... you have NEVER seen a computer surf faster than linux running opera!! I used to run red hat 9 until I needed the GB more than I needed linux (sadly), but until then, it went literally 5-10x faster than my windows-running PCs. A complete rocket I'll tell ya.
I'm trying to get the computer to run a NIC right now ... the drivera are all there and lights are blinkin but it's not workin right :( This can get pretty tiring ... all the little problems that I KNOW will be like a checkbox away to fix ... lol, you know how it goes :)teknodave24 Mar 2004, 01:33 Well, maybe I can talk to my friend to see what he can do and hook me up with Linux ... he is good at stuff like that. ^_^Guest25 Mar 2004, 20:12 w0000000000tttt!!!
I'm running an old skool tracker on it and it's kicking ass!! You gotta hear what this thing's doin! 486 DX/4-120, 8MB SIMM, 40Mhz FSB, and AWE 32 goodness. Ahhhh, the good old days ... No underrun problems either!Guest25 Mar 2004, 20:19
