There seems to be a bunch of talented people on this forum so maybe someone can help me with this topic. I need a program, hopefully freeware, which will allow me to create new as well as edit existing fonts for Windows. Any ideas guys?

Have you tried looking on Download.com Normally there are alot of Freeware /shareware etc proggies on there for everything. You might find something. I doubt you will find anything too extensive that is free because of the amount of work that goes into making a program like that. But that site might be your best bet. Sorry if this was no help.

    =)

Thanks guys I'll have a look.

David, I found the time (like I don't have any time on my hands right now, duh!) Though why you would want my opinion I'll never know.

This is something you can try. Its free to try and then really expensive to buy but it looks like it might be what you want =).

I downloaded Font Lab but I can't get it to open over half the fonts I tried to alter!!!

That might be because its a free to try program so it has restrictions maybe? You should look online and see if the company has made a lesser program that still does what you want at a cheaper price or free? maybe er something :D

 Damn you are getting too nerdy here trying to edit fonts.
Why for? There's too lil time in the world to create your own fonts.
And there are already tens of thousands of fonts out there.

Are you just trying to create flashy text for headings, CD covers, etc?
If so, it'd be a lot quicker just using Photoshop or Fireworks.

But yeah, I don't really think you should waste your time because if you create fonts, only you will be able to view documents using those fonts unless other people download and install the fonts that you have created.

But if you want to waste time, then go ahead.

I found a good font editor that seems to work just fine. I've not taken the time to read the manual yet but I might get around to it one day.

To answer your questions Mel David I want a font editor to do a couple of things. First to edit and correct existing fonts that I've downloaded. Sometimes the author does a bad job on a letter or two or omits punctuation marks. With an editor I can change that.

I also want to create my own font(s) by importing my own original hand lettered calligraphy. The import feature allows me to import bitmaps. If I scan in my own calligraphy I can then import the letters into the program to create my own unique font.

My goal is to use the fonts to print out calligraphy so it doesn't matter if no one else has the fonts or not. I used to do calligraphy by hand but it's so laborious. With so many great computer calligraphy fonts available it's almost pointless to do calligraphy by hand and try and sell it. No one is willing to pay the price such art demands. But simply typing and framing is another matter.

I take nerdy as a complement! :D I've a long interest in writing systems and may oneday pursue a degree pertaining to their study. I'll be using a font creation program to take some of my own writing system ideas and make them look a bit better than my own rather messy handwriting allows (though not all of them are designed to write English in).
